World Food Day – October 16th

The SDGs Club in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics at Al-Taqwa Institute of Higher Education Celebrated World Food Day on October 16th.

World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year worldwide on October 16 to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with hunger and food security, including the World Food Program, the World Health Organization, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development

Over 10 percent of the world’s population suffers from hunger despite the fact that plenty of food is produced to feed everyone. And over a third of all food ends up going to waste, a problem particularly prevalent in wealthy Western countries. These are the kinds of facts that are behind the drive to eliminate world hunger by 2030, the UN’s SDG 1 (No Poverty-Zero Hunger).

Awareness on the importance of World Food Day was raised among the staff, faculty, and students through multiple sessions as an integral part of the celebration. In collaboration with Helping Hand for Relief and Development Foundation, around 250 vulnerable students and members of the local community were hosted with the free lunch and takeaway of food to their families.

Moreover, fifty (50) orphans from the Darul Rahmah Orphanage were invited for having the lunch and takeaway of food on the day of celebration. The session was open to public and we also welcomed a large number of the needy members of the local community who visited Al-Taqwa Institute of Higher Education on October 16th for serving the lunch, takeaway of food to their families and celebrated the World Food Day with us.
